You can get a 2005 for under $7K (Craigslist) with full features: cruise, AC, JBL stereo, electric windows, etc. They get 45-50mpg in town, 46mpg at 70, traction control and ABS brakes. They also have nice, roomy interiors, reminds me of a Passat. These things seat four very comfortably, with all kinds of well-designed storage compartments.

Plus, they have a definite geek factor. Just avoid the silver-gray ones. God, what a dumpy color for a car…

Brilliant. A high performance vehicle that IS a luxury car, but doesn’t appear flashy or exciting, is extremely expensive, and also very complicated and expensive to repair when it breaks down.
