If he could be even a below-average fielder at 2B *and* his hitting regressed some (say -.050 or so OPS) he would *still* be a league-average 2B, which in the Twins organization would be incredibly valuable, considering he was free in the first place.

Not sure how realistic this is but IMO they should definitely give this a try. Mast was strictly an INF in college, he played some 2B in the Jays system, and part of one game there with the Twins. Teams used to do more of the OF-to-INF switches back in the day, didn’t they? I think the three 70′s Dodger World Series teams had 2 ex-OF’s playing SS/2B (Russell/Lopes).
