“Gleeman and The Geek” #21: Mijares and Minor Moves
This week's "Gleeman and The Geek" is a special Christmas/Hanukkah episode and the topics included Jose Mijares' departure, Bill Smith's return, Prince Fielder's likely home, waiving Jim Hoey, signing former top prospects Sean Burroughs, J.R. I agree when you say in the podcast that it is a good sign that the Twins have been taking flyers on the (former) prospects like Towles and Pearce. But I feel that you left out one major point regarding these players: competition. We saw some players at times get complacent last season because they knew that their closest competition was hurt, not ready for the bigs, or just non-existent. Now that you have some depth at AAA, it might throw a scare into say, I dont know, Valencia knowing that someone is hitting .330 at AAA and is ready to make the jump. Having that in AAA should hopefully keep the “fire in their bellies” burning and maybe they’ll “get at it” like they should be every day. Either way, you should have someone performing as they should be, whether its a starter or a guy from Rochester.
I really enjoy the podcast, you guys have been doing a good job lately of giving good content, even when there isn’t much going on. Keep up the good work.

On the topic of low risk signings of former top prospects, I’d like to see the Twins sign Josh Fields. He could be an upgrade over Hughes as backup infielder and bench bat.
