Off to Cincy
Today's blog entry is a very light one and there won't be anything new here tomorrow, because I leave (or have left, depending on when you read this) for Cincinnati, Ohio at 5 a.m. today. The obvious question in response to that statement is "Why in the world would you go to Cincinnati at five in the morning?"
The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) convention, that's why. Hundreds of baseball nuts from around the country are getting together in Cincinnati this weekend and I'll be there. I'm a fairly new SABR member and this will be my first convention, so I'm pretty excited.
I've heard from people who have gone in the past that the convention is a very good time, and perhaps even more than going to the actual convention, I'm looking forward to meeting all of these "online friends" I've made over the past couple years and all these writers whose work I've enjoyed.
Joe Dimino and Vinay Kumar from The Hardball Times, Rob Neyer and Alan Schwarz from ESPN.com, Chris Dial, Dan Szymborski and Mitchel Lichtman from Baseball Think Factory, Chris Kahrl from Baseball Prospectus, and a number of other guys who I've "met" and become friendly with through websites and e-mails and Diamond-Mind leagues will all be there. Hell, Tom Tippett, the creator of Diamond-Mind, will be there!
If anyone else reading this right now is going to be in Cincy, I'd love to meet you. Look for the big guy with the Twins hat and white Adidas shoes. I'm pretty sure we'll have name tags on too, if for some crazy reason that description isn't descriptive enough (I imagine there might be quite a few "big guys" with hats on at a baseball convention). Definitely find me and say hello.
I'm flying back Sunday night and, depending on how exhausted/hungover/sleepy I am, I may have a big SABR convention write-up posted for your entertainment at some point on Monday. I'm taking my digital camera too, so there will probably be plenty of pictures of me smiling goofily at the camera with someone whose name you may or maybe not know standing next to me. Or there could just be a few pictures of me, passed out in my hotel room. We'll see how everything goes.
