“Gleeman and The Geek” #48: SABR, Snubs, and Selling

Topics for this week's episode of Gleeman and The Geek included Joe Mauer making the All-Star team while Josh Willingham got snubbed, my vodka-filled experience at the SABR convention in Minneapolis, Ryan Doumit's contract extension, John Bonnes returning from his East Coast ballpark tour, Trevor Plouffe staying hot, whether the Twins should be in full-on sell mode, the Francisco Liriano dilemma, and why Pizza Luce at 3:00 a.m. is a bad life decision.

  1. paraphrasing Bonnes:

the twins are sellers because the signed Doumit long term. They never would have entered long term negotiations with him if they weren’t wanting to trade him. If they were buyers there would be no reason to sign him. You only sign a guy, if you were going to trade him.

    Huh?

  2. When you were discussing AL 3rd basemen in competition with Trevor Plouffe for All-Star spots, you forgot about Brett Lawrie (2.8 fWAR) and Mike Moustakas (2.6 fWAR). As of today, Kyle Seager has also been more valuable (2.0 fWAR) than Plouffe (1.7 fWAR). The “snubbed” Trevor Plouffe actually rates 6th in fWAR among AL 3rd basemen.

I’ve seen/heard a lot of complaints about Josh Willingham or Plouffe getting left off the All-Star roster, but I’ve yet to see anybody specifically name a reserve who should’ve been bumped to make room for either one of them. Would you bump Mike Trout, Adam Jones, or Mark Trumbo for Willingham? All three of the OF reserves are more valuable, by fWAR, than Willingham to this point–and four more outfielders not on the All-Star roster (Jackson, Reddick, Gordon, Gentry) have been better than him, too. Of course the 6th-best 3B in the league shouldn’t take a roster spot from Miguel Cabrera, either.

So, what exactly is the “beef” with Willingham or Plouffe missing out on All-Star honors?
