“Gleeman and The Geek” #4: Groupies
This week's episode of "Gleeman and The Geek" was recorded at the Wild Boar in Hopkins and the beer of choice was Nordeast. And around five minutes into the show we gained a random female co-host/groupie named Abby, who for some reason decided to sit down in our booth and watch us talk for a half-hour while occasionally chiming in. As a professional I focused on podcasting rather than hitting on her, much to John Bonnes' disappointment.
Topics included Liam Hendriks, Joe Benson, and Chris Parmelee debuting in the same game, explaining Kim Kardashian to my grandparents, Joe Mauer's frustrating year, Kyle Gibson's surgery, Alex Wimmers' comeback, Abby's thoughts on the relationship between dimples and favorable press, Trevor Plouffe's progress, Barry White versus James Earl Jones, the local media's coverage of injuries, the great unknown of concussions, and a bunch of other stuff.

I agree that ripping Mauer is pointless. My guess is that he dealt with a staff infection from the surgery. This could possibly be the surgeon’s fault. It is certainly not Joe Mauer’s fault.

Kermit the Frog – hahaha. Yes.
I’d say Gleeman sounds like Barton Fink.
Kermit and Fink.

Whaddaya mean “It’s not his fault”? He makes a lot of money! He couldn’t have paid a psychic to tell him he was going to get this “infection” you speak of? He’s soft. And he sucks too. I think I speak for must, if not all, of us when I say that if you offered me 184 million dollars to play baseball I would turn it down. In a heartbeat.
On a completely unrelated note…
Michael Cuddyer is the bees knees and makes next to nothing. And he’s dreamy

Did you see Souhan’s diatribe about Mauer in his NFL article today? Man he really hates Mauer.

Enjoying this podcast, but if you are going to have someone else join in, have them speak into the microphone. I know it was an unexpected guest, but straining to hear her throughout the podcast is getting old. Otherwise, I really enjoy listening to these, please keep doing them!!!

Trevor Plouffe’s last 28 days (from Baseball Reference):
.289/.337/.454, 8 doubles, 2 home runs. Not great, but it’s progress. His walk/strikeout numbers (7/25) suggest that there is still room for plate discipline/strike zone control where he apparently made strides this year at AAA. This minimal progress in the majors combined with his incredible hot streak at Rochester has to at least provide some hope that he can be a solid starting 2B/SS if he can figure out the defensive issues he’s had (most of which seem to be more mental – throwing the ball away, forgetting how many outs there are).
Speaking of defensive mistakes, I’ve been wondering why no one is making as big of a deal about the Twins shoddy defense and its effect on their pitching. Especially given the pitch-to-contact type pitchers, it seems like just plain bad defense at second, third, short, right, and left would contribute not only to more runs allowed and higher ERAs, but also potentially to pitchers wearing down faster and even trying to be too perfect, leading to higher walk rates.

Best episode yet. Couldn’t believe how fast the time flew on this one.

Two things.
1. Considering the horrendous record this year, can you devote a chunk of the next podcast to who would be in line for the Twins draft pick in the first round next year. Would we be in the top 5?
2. Also, considering that you mentioned you’d take questions from a crowd at the place you’re at any given week…..would you be willing to list beforehand the bar you’re going to be at?
